Turning one is a big milestone! At Treehouse Pediatrics in Logan, Utah, we love helping families navigate this exciting stage of growth and development. By 12 months old, many babies are becoming more independent, exploring their surroundings, and showing off their unique personalities.

Moving Toward Table Foods

Around the one-year mark, babies are ready to enjoy a variety of solid foods that match their chewing abilities. Most meals should now consist of table foods, while carefully avoiding foods that could pose a choking hazard.

At this age, many children do well with three meals and two to three healthy snacks each day. Milk remains an important part of their diet, but it’s also a great time to begin transitioning away from bottles and toward sippy cups. Most children should be fully transitioned by 15 months.

Encouraging Learning and Communication

Your child’s language skills are growing quickly, even if much of what they say sounds like “word salad.” Talking, reading, and playing together are some of the best ways to encourage speech development.

Try naming body parts, pointing out everyday objects, and talking through daily activities like feeding, bathing, and getting dressed. These simple interactions help build language skills and strengthen your bond.

Growing Independence

Many one-year-olds are eager to do things on their own. They may want to feed themselves, help with dressing, or explore every corner of the house. While independence is exciting, safety remains important. Create opportunities for safe exploration while continuing to set gentle boundaries.

This is also a great time to reinforce positive behaviors with praise and maintain consistent routines, especially at bedtime.

Developmental Milestones

Every child develops at their own pace, but many 12-month-olds are beginning to:

  • Say a few simple words like “mama,” “dada,” or “bye”
  • Use a cup
  • Walk while holding onto furniture
  • Play interactive games like peek-a-boo
  • Stack or place objects inside one another
  • Show more interest in social interactions

In the coming months, you may see your child begin walking independently, climbing steps, using a spoon, and even scribbling with crayons.

Don’t Forget Dental Care

Healthy habits start early. Use a soft toothbrush to gently brush your child’s teeth once or twice each day. Establishing a dental routine now can help support healthy smiles for years to come.

Looking Ahead

The first year goes by quickly, and there’s so much to celebrate. If your child is approaching their first birthday, we look forward to helping you monitor their growth, answer your questions, and prepare for the exciting milestones ahead.
