Summer is a great time for family adventures, whether you’re spending the day at the park, hiking local trails, or enjoying time by the pool. While there’s plenty of fun to be had, it’s also important to keep your child’s health and safety in mind during the warmer months.

As your trusted pediatrician in Logan, Treehouse Pediatrics has a few simple tips to help your family stay safe all summer long.

Protect Your Child From the Sun

Sunburns can happen quickly, especially during the middle of the day. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher about 15 minutes before heading outside, and remember to reapply every two hours or after swimming. Hats, sunglasses, and lightweight clothing can also provide extra protection.

For babies younger than 6 months, it’s best to keep them in the shade as much as possible and avoid direct sunlight.

Stay Safe Around Water

Whether you’re at a pool, lake, or splash pad, water safety should always come first. Children should be supervised at all times when they’re near water—even if they know how to swim. Life jackets are a smart choice for boating and open water activities, and swimming lessons can help build confidence and safety skills as children grow.

Beat the Heat

Kids can become overheated faster than adults, especially during active play. Encourage frequent water breaks throughout the day, even if your child doesn’t say they’re thirsty. Try to schedule outdoor activities during the cooler morning or evening hours, and take breaks in the shade or indoors when temperatures climb.

Watch for signs of heat-related illness, including dizziness, excessive fatigue, headache, nausea, or unusual fussiness in younger children.

Keep Summer Fun and Safe

A little planning can go a long way toward preventing common summer injuries and illnesses. By staying mindful of the sun, water, and heat, you can help your child enjoy everything the season has to offer.
